A new hope, purpose, devotion & charity by the Good Samaritan Mission of SW Florida.

Many have already forgotten.
But me, I can’t escape the memories.
Two years ago, I was a firsthand witness to the ruinous aftermath of a deadly 7.0 earthquake that killed more than 250,000 in the island nation of Haiti. Myself and photo journalist Andrew West were among the first reporters to arrive, and what we saw has haunted us ever since. Already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti was crippled – men, women and children were entombed in mountains of rubble that left families devastated and millions homeless.

Twelve dollars.

That’s what I’m asking of you today.

As we approach the one year anniversary of the most devastating earthquake to ever shake the Western hemisphere, there is a guilt in my heart. We did not cause this disaster in Haiti, nor was the earthquake the beginning of its struggles. But we have it so good. We should be doing more. It seems we have forgotten.

Many ask why we should reach out to this destitute island nation when we face mountains of our own hardships. My answer is to tell you of my visit to the tiny, struggling orphanage of Bon Samaritan (The Good Samaritan) in a small suburb of Port-au-Prince. This is where I began to see them not as a people to be pitied, but a neighbor to be uplifted, as in the Biblical parable.

There is a saying that, “Haiti will break your heart and never return all the pieces.”

The Bon Samaritan Orphanage is very concerned with the burgeoning Cholera pandemic now making its way into Port-Au-Prince.  As everyone is aware, with over a million displaced in camps across the region, the formula for communicable diseases being spread could not be more severe.
